TP-Link’s TAPO product range started to make real life sense when some of their product options were deployed as solution finding options for queries received from residents in a village.

During a two-week spell, the residents were confronted almost daily with reports that their garage doors are reported to them as open at odd hours of the night and even during daytime. They all believe that they weren’t active in their garages prior to the incidents, nor did they use i.e. return with their car that could have caused the garage doors to be open. Some were out with their car for quite some time before the incident were reported to them etc.

Making things more complicated and to help paranoia set in was the thought of the remote jamming/manipulating duo that returned while almost all of the residents did experience a difference in the way that their garage doors opened from then on as if it got opened by putting some stress on them etc. Physical stress could also be the case it someone was trying to squeeze the top of the garage door with the idea in mind to reach the emergency release rope from the outside.

Those who were interested in putting the above thoughts to rest, opted to deploy the TAPO Smart Contact Sensor T110 on the inside of their garage door(s) while also placing a TAPO H100 Smart IoT Hub in close proximity to act as the means to relay physical contact conditions to the “cloud”.

A second TAPO H100 Smart IoT Hub were also deployed on the power in the lounge near to the TV and Fibre Internet to ensure that the trigger sound opted for is properly audible while being present in the house/lounge. Away from home you’ll get a notification on the App while also very handy for those moments when you get to the shops and wondering if you actually did drop the garage door down while driving away.

The emergency release rope on the garages that were found open were also removed in case their ropes were accessed from external human source albeit that no CCTV footage was found to show any human activity. Below is an example of what one of the options were that we needed to consider as a possible cause.
